Legislative Bill 160
In 1989, Legislative Bill 160 was proposed to the Nebraska Unicameral. The bill would have transferred Kearney State College from the Nebraska State College System to the University of Nebraska system. The 1989 legislature passed a different bill, LB 247 moving the institution. After much deliberation, including a Nebraska State Supreme Court review, Kearney State College was inducted into the university system as the University of Nebraska at Kearney on July 1, 1991. This section highlights Legislative Bill 160 and includes commentary from current (2016) UNK chancellor Doug Kristensen, former chancellor Bill Nester, and letters from the Kearney State College alumni association promoting LB 160.
